The process of buying a new home can often be complex and strenuous filled with a plethora of difficult questions along the way. How many bedrooms do you need? How many bathrooms should it have? How much space is needed inside of the house? How big should the back-yard be? Do you need a pool? Single or double kitchen sink? What type of appliances should you get? The questions can seemingly go on forever when trying to find the perfect home for you and your family. To each individual and family there are different features, in terms of what a home offers, that are of more importance than others.

So what are some of the top home features that perspective new-home buyers are now looking for? According to the latest preference survey conducted and released by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) and Better Homes and Gardens recently during the NAHB International Builders’ Show in Las Vegas, NV; some of the top things new-home buyers are looking for in their homes are energy efficiency, adequate storage, and a good amount of outdoor space (a decent sized back-yard). Additionally, buyers of all different age groups also desired exterior lighting, separate laundry rooms in the house, a patio, and energy-star appliances and windows. On the other hand, buyers expressed less interest in elaborate (expensive) outdoor kitchens and fireplaces, in-door elevators, cork flooring, pet washing stations, and two-story family rooms and entryways.

With the desires of new-home buyers changing; home builders are trying to keep up with current times and are starting to shift their focus to what the millennial generation’s preferences are when it comes to new-home design. With present day technology making it easier than ever to create, customize, and save (via Pinterest boards and other similar apps) the perfect “dream home” online long before perspective home buyers are actually ready to make a purchase; home builders are attempting to build more homes which are designed to meet the lavished expectations of millennials. Some of the desires millennials have in regards to their future new-home include having the capability to utilize technology for monitoring and entertainment in the home, fully optimized/well-equipped kitchens, comfortable in-door living accommodations, and spacious outdoor living spaces. In general, millennials whom are contemplating a new-home purchase strongly want their home to be technologically up to date with a casual, capacious living area.
